About the Role:
We're seeking a hands-on Engineering Lead to drive our engineering team's most critical initiatives while remaining deeply involved in code and system architecture. You'll be responsible for both the technical vision and execution across our cutting-edge out-of-home content delivery technology stack that serves 65k+ businesses and 150 million monthly viewers. This role combines significant coding responsibilities with technical leadership, team coordination, and cross-functional collaboration.
You'll work directly with our CTO and Chief Product Officer while interfacing with other senior leaders across the organization. The ideal candidate thrives on complex technical challenges with ambiguous requirements, loves mentoring through code, and can seamlessly shift between writing production code, architecting distributed systems, and aligning stakeholders around technical decisions. You must be the type of engineer who can dive into unfamiliar systems, figure out what needs to be built, work across departments and tools, and own the outcome from conception to delivery.
This position reports to the CTO and is on-site in Austin, TX! Availability to be in-office 4-5 days a week is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hands-on technical leadership: Write significant production code while architecting and driving implementation of major system components across our full technology stack
- Executive collaboration: Work directly with CTO and Chief Product Officer to translate strategic vision into technical execution and provide technical input on company-wide initiatives
- Complex problem solving: Tackle ambiguous technical challenges, reverse-engineer existing systems, and figure out solutions when requirements are unclear or evolving
- Team coordination and mentoring: Guide and develop other engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and technical decision-making without formal people management responsibilities
- System architecture: Design scalable, reliable solutions using our AWS-native infrastructure and data pipeline
- Cross-functional ownership: Partner with product, design, data, sales, and business teams to understand needs, translate requirements into technical solutions, and own delivery end-to-end
- Technical strategy: Drive technical roadmap decisions, technology choices, and engineering best practices across the organization
- Full-stack versatility: Work across backend services, data pipelines, infrastructure, and frontend systems as needed to solve business problems
Requirements:

- Computer Science degree or equivalent demonstrated expertise
- 6+ years delivering world-class, customer-facing software products with increasing technical leadership responsibilities
- Proven track record of architecting and implementing complex distributed systems in ambiguous environments
- Strong coding skills with ability to contribute significantly to production codebases and figure out existing systems quickly
- Experience mentoring and technically leading other engineers without formal management
- Excellent communication skills and ability to influence technical decisions across teams and interface with senior leadership
- Deep understanding of full-stack development and system interactions
- Demonstrated ability to work across departments, tools, and codebases to own outcomes
- Experience with cloud-native architectures and containerized applications
Nice to Haves:
- AWS experience, particularly ECS, Lambda, and related services
- Backend development with Node.js, Python, or PHP
- iOS/Android applications, SDKs and operating systems
- Infrastructure as code with Terraform
- Monitoring and observability with Datadog
- Data warehouse and analytics experience with Snowflake, dbt, or Sigma
- Experience leveraging AI tools to enhance development productivity
- Track record of successfully navigating complex, multi-team technical projects
